There's a new article every week about why the 90s weren't the glorious halcyon of human civilization that we remember it being. Every list and gallery is filled with the usual malaise of '90s suburbia— Crystal Pepsi, 14.4k modems, Blockbuster, fuzzy TVs, the Macarena, non-existent skip protection, Creed, Jar Jar Binks, and the unfortunate passing of some beloved pop-cultural icons. It's no wonder we thought the '90s were great when frosted tips and boy bands were the worst of our problems (at least for those that didn't suffer under the ultra-high crime rates of inner-city America, where the 90s brought little but a peak of social ills). But return to the 1990s outside the bubble of American suburbia or British high streets and you'll find a world that was in decline. While we may have been angry as our PlayStation's spindles broke yet again before we had the chance to pop in Medal of Honor or Syphon Filter, youths our age were being systematically raped in concentration camps in Eastern Europe, starving to death under a totalitarian government in North Korea, and being slaughtered with machetes in central Africa.
