On the one hand, this does seem like overkill, on the other, that kid was assuredly an obnoxious little shit who probably would be improved by having some decency scared into him.
I dont know what your talking about of course its overkill aside from the fact that releasing his name could have seriously hurt his future as well sueing him is overkill his its not like hes even going to be the one paying even if they lose his mom has to deal with all this its not like he even did much all he did was realize a video about him cheating streamers have openly cheated and not gotten sued and thats how they make there money.
Nope "Furthermore, Epic Games Inc. has released the defendants name publicly, therefore allowing news articles and different online publications to obtain his name and in turn release additional information. Referencing State of Delaware House Bill No. 64 it is illegal to release under age individuals' personal information by any agencies." This smells like lawbreaking and possible nasty lawsuit with chance of criminal charges on the side. Someone at the law firm didn't do their due diligence, you don't release the name of a minor in a press release. Whether he's a little shit or not, he is a little shit protected by the law, which, Epic games law firm should have been well aware of before dropping names to clickbait news sites.
Im aware it was intentional which is why I think they should try to backpedal as fast as possible rather then pushing the issue.
Normally I agree with the name and shame philosophy when it comes to cheating. But this is just a case of a stupid kid being a stupid kid, neither he nor his family are deserving of the inevitable death threats and visits by various SWAT teams. On the flip side, Epic Games isn’t a big development shop, so I doubt they even HAD a legal team or PR person to run the press release through. Not releasing the names of minors isn’t exactly a law that comes up often, outside of family court, so I don’t think they knew it was illegal. Most of the time when something is mentioned in the news regarding a minor, it’s mentioned that they’re going unnamed to “protect their privacy” - which doesn’t exactly scream “HEY DIPSHIT THERE’S A LITERAL LAW ABOUT IT.” That said, ignorance of the law is no defense from the law. Epic Games Inc is in for some bad times after this shitshow, whether they backpedal or not.
People cheating in multiplayer games actually does material harm to the developers, publishers, Hell... pretty much everyone involved in making the game. It drives away other paying customers which lowers the income and, if the problem is bad enough, can negatively impact a game’s lifespan. So no, suing is definitely not overkill.
