Why were Nexus' words garbled and then assaulted Richter?

  1. He is asshole

  2. Paid by patreon

  3. Wanted to mess with an Earthling

  4. Something else

I was just listening to the part where the local auditor Nexus and Richter meet. The scene is seriously messed up, and makes little sense.

Why did he assault (initial slap) Richter and why are most all Richter's & Nexus' words garbled. If I understood it in the past I no longer do. I recall we had a discussion on this before on the old forum.

Is it just because of his patreon wished it to be that way? Even Nexus' words were garbled, it makes little sense.

So it seems Richter had to ask for his profession trial before it was offered to him. He did so mentally.

After which he, as the dumbass he is, said "yes" in his mind before being ready.

Nexus is being a dick in this scene, but Richter is being thoughtless. He knew the prompt was reacting to his thoughts.

Now Nexus allows Richter to slam face first into gravel and he slides down a little on his face. This pisses Richter off.

This is followed by a scene where Nexus presents himself as a 12-foot black ubermensch with gold hair, surrounded by luxury and multiple sex partners. Said sex partners include

Nexus then insults Richter, challenges his sexuality etc.

Now we know from later books that Richter is bisexual. We also know that in the early books he had a bit of homophobia, making gay jokes and stuff like that, presumably because the subject makes him uncomfortable.

As rapidly becomes clear, Nexus has full and unrrestricted access to Richter's mind, his fear, his sexuality, his hidden desires, dreams and hopes. He uses these things to craft what is effectively a dreamworld. The primary goal of said dreamworld is to allow Richter to find his name. Richter cannot say his own name because its effectively a dream with weird rules and Nexus can't tell him because that goes against the purpose of the trials.

Now what follows is that Richter gets aggressive with Nexus and the dreamworld/ Nexus's realm and Nexus adapts to Richter's approach. Nexus doesn't stop Richter because he is ultimattely just a passenger on Richter's journey of self discovery. Wanna fight the guy here to help you gain your profession? Go ahead, you are in control.

Richter chose to fight dirty, Nexus adapted. Richter brings in Alma, Nexus brings in the mechanical eagle.

That is, until Richter spits Nexus in the face and manages to get Nexus to go off script.

Not sure what you mean with initial slap. Richter struck first.

True he does slap first. The rest is still valid though, its a trial where Nexus digs into Richter's flaws and he falls for it. That's not Nexus's fault, its Richter's fault.

Nexus is clearly picking his behaviors, mannerism and so on from Richter's mind. When Richter starts getting angry, Nexus plays on that because its his job to help you learn who you are. If Richter had jumped into bed with them, then he could have spent weeks enjoying himself. Nexus is clear all the way through that Richter is making the decisions.

He chose to go for the profession, even if that was on a technicality.

He chose to respond to Nexus's provocations with anger, which of course Nexus, being elbow deep in Richter's mind knew was one way of getting to see the real Richter, the bisexual angry mess.

He chose to challenge the auditor.

He chose to stick with it when the auditor tortured him, when the auditor broke him down piece by piece. Attacking him in every ways, making offers of peace if only Richter will give up his profession.

In the end Nexus explains his actions as follows

Nexus did what he did to reach Richter, to force him to truly show himself as he is rather than the facade. Only then was he ready to become an enchanter.

The pixie queen was shown graciousness and beautiful meadows during her trial, but not to mess with Richter but rather to help her grow to a greater understanding of herself, to strip away her layers till she was ready.

He then treated her like a queen in front of Richter because he is a dick and ensured she'd tell Richter all about her wondrous adventure. Doing his job and being a dick isn't contradictory.

Which leads me to an unrelated thought.

Maybe the reason Randolphus isn't professed as a water mage despite being a master, is that he is not truly a mage. His truths are different and so he will never pass the profession trial to show himself to be a mage. He may have tried to pass multiple times, only to fail in the end every time as there was no inherent truth to uncover.

Enalise on the other hand would have showed herself to have multiple truths, being both miner and crafter.

For Richter this could mean that while he can go for as many profession trials as he wants at skill level 45, he will only be able to uncover his own truths rather than learning any profession simply because of his limitless affinity.

I deny that. Nexus slaps the dude out of nowhere, and then says Richter is the one that wants it to get violent. The Nexus and whoever scrambled his words is setting up the whole situation from the start. The guys words are scambled in explaining why he is here, and if Nexus knew they would be scambled why even say them? And then before anything else he slaps Richter. That encryption and slap that happens is setting up anger when Richter was being calm.

After Nexus becoming violent (not Richter) and Richter is still not able to understand Nexus words that he assumes that you have to fight to get your profession. That is based on Nexus' action.

Now if Nexus is meaning that some time shifted version of Richter is doing this to himself / setting this all up, then maybe it makes more sense.

Think it was just part of the magic opening phrase. He couldn't say his name because he wasn't Richter, he was enchanter. Nexus likely did say his name but again the magic so all Richter could hear was gobbledygook

Precisely, Nexus is setting up the situation from the start, that's kinda my point. Nexus's goal is to peel back the layers and force Richter (or any other trial goer) to reveal his inner truth to himself, and part of that is that inner monster of wrath of his. Wouldn't be much of a trial if the auditor isn't setting up situations designed to get to that endgoal.

Richter's voice is scrambled because he attempts to call himself Richter. Nexus's voice is scrambled because he can't be the one to name. Its a trial.

Richter is the one escalating and the one making the choices. Yes Nexus plays on his anger, slaps him, plays on his suppressed bisexuality, mocks him in a hundred ways, because its a trial to figure out who you are. Finding Richter's biggest weakness aka his inner monster and playing on it is part of the job.

We know the auditor is being watched, and not just by whomever may have paid him off to help Richter. From the Roswan thing we know there is at least one layer above them, with even more powerful beings keeping an eye on auditors to ensure they don't break the rules or go too far. This means Nexus probably can't go much further than the slap, can't truly harm someone during a trial unless they choose to challenge him, whether provoked or not.

Nexus did get into trouble with them over Roswan, probably because he couldn't get into Roswan's head the way he did Richter's so he kept escalating till he failed and Roswan was rewarded for beating the auditor or because Roswan is annoying enough to make Nexus break the rules.
