Ricther really doesn’t have any choice but to harass the enemy winter encampments with everything he has.

I suppose You might consider not doing anything but training and building for war a plan. That is until all those camps surrounding you start to push in.

I don’t think the big bears will wait around all winter. I believe as soon as they have what they think is enough of the eye ointment they will make a move for the village.

Of course they will attack soon. But taking a high risk uncertain gains gambit to prevent that does not seem like a good idea.

IMHO Richter is far more likely to suffer catastrophic losses amongst his raiders than he is to hurt the bugbears on a militarily meaningful scale.

No one said do nothing. But abandoning your fortifications to attack enemy fortications with many, many times the troops to draw on is a mistake.

The village cannot beat the bugbears on its own. They may beat the first wave of bugbear invaders, but they'd be devastated as well. More allies with significant forces are needed.

Probably be better if keeping the majority of his Troops in Village and harassing, sabotaging and assassinating the Bugbear Camps with a Small elite and expert strike teams, and ambushing and raiding their supply chain and patrols with similar groups. Maybe an occasional larger raid if it's out together largely by and of Elves and Sprites with Richter and a few others as support.

    I totally agree.

He can’t afford not to harass winter encampments surrounding his villages.

He can't afford costly raids on enemy encampments whitling away his elites, leaving them without a military backbone to shore up the militia.

Raids cost the raiders too, we saw that with the raid against the goblins.

If they can get a few thousand troops together raiding would make sense. With 200 mostly green troops and a couple dozen soldiers backing up a militia going on the offensive is the wrong move.

You always want to make this about going toe to toe. That attack on the last Goblin fortification was more then a swift attack launching arrows and running away. Yes they did attack with the intent to save the prisoners but they were also intent on destroying the enemy encampment. There is a very BIG difference in harassing the enemy and making full fledge engagements. Things are always going to happen during military actions that are not expected. Those things can be mitigated as long as your forces stay fluid and aware.

Drag, people do die in wars. Ways to limit that are by hit and RUN tactics. Using surprise to your benefit. Hitting the enemy when they are not ready and ill equipped. Denying the enemy food, resources, shelter and sleep. In a world that locks down for winter everyone could be considered captives to their positions. Granting one side mobility is a big game changer over the other side. Ricther will already have the ability to drop fox fire from the air which would be equivalent to fire bombing Dresden or Japan. The ability of attacking with ranged weapons in shoot and scoot operations could be very beneficial. They just need to develop the right set of items and skills. Dog sleds, snow skis, and snow shoes could make a very big difference in this war.

Or Ricther could just sit and produce what goods he can and wait. He could teach more people to fight as he waits. While thousands of fully trained troops are waiting for winter to break.

The bugbears are invaders, they are almost certainly facing local resistance and they are a tribal culture that likes to war. Which means they are probably pretty good raiders themselves.

Consider the range of most weapons available(220 yards for a longbow, pretty sure the sprites don't have that kind of range unless they are using composite or magical bows. Neither of which has been my impression), you need to get fairly close to fire across high pallisades. The bugbears will build as high up as they reasonably can (ensuring they have the high ground), partially to give themselves better line of sight to spot people trying to get close. Clearing out the surrounding land is a given.

Why would snow shoes and skis be unknown to mountain dwellers? These are tools known to most cultures that live in mountainous terrain. Sledges are fairly simple constructs as well.

They were known in the medieval period, but not really used militarily.

Instead of going on the attack or passively waiting, Richter should take the path that gives him the best chance, namely that of seeking out allies with forces of their own. There are many smaller tribes around, Richter needs their alligance and more trained troops rather than more trainees. Heneeds to convince HM to use her influence and that off the HT to find more allies amongst the larger tribes. The bugbears currently do not consider the village a threat, nor are they free to throw many thousand troops at them. They are engaged across a massive theater of war and even with the Dungeon to entice them, the village is hardly the only prize worth having. They may be able to bring thousands of troops against the village in a spring campaign, but they'd have to take them from other places.

A small nation cannot easily fight an empire and its foolish to try on your own when surrounded by potential allies in the same situation. They too will be swallowed by the alliance without support. Even the fearless kindir who had a real shot of remaining hidden in their grove knew they had to fight back or see the world around them burn until the bugbears finally managed to unravel their protective magics. More sensible races with less protected settlements will realize that they are in a lot more danger than the kindir.

I think a key question is, can the HT have their portal built in time to connect to the MV portal to provide military aid?

Ricther could build a local portal there. It wouldn’t matter if it’s a one way portal back to his place. That would be another way around the HM not having a proper portal built.

A tier one portal should be well within their means. But the sprites lack the technological knowhow, only Richter has that. HM has agreed to cover the costs, but they still need the knowledge.

One interesting thought: Why can Richter build portals with settlement points, but no one else can?

Could buildings built with settlement points have knowledge requirements as well? If so why can Richter build higher levelled versions of buildings that he lacks the blueprints for?

Is it because the ley-lines know how to do it and therefore do not require the knowledge? Are there limits on how high up said buildings can be before he needs blueprints, extra costs for not having the required technology making portals prohibitively expensive, something else?

I think its just knowledge. He has the techs for portals so he can build them, no reason settlement points would stand in the way there. As for the other higher level buildings, that seems to line up more with buildings that can be built as huts. "Almost any building can be built at level 0" or something like that. Nothing should stop Richter from building any level 0 building, no matter how obscure, if it exists at a level zero state, sans maybe exotic materials (which he has a philosopher's cauldron for). Being able to upgrade everything seems like the paired reward for doing something to gain settlement points so early that you don't have blueprints for things.

Speaking of settlement points and blueprints. I wonder if Richter could build another goblin hold Town hall for the kinder village?

You would think every village or town would benefit from a town hall. It seems like it would only be beneficial to Richter.

She does have the celestial tree which Ricther gave her to bond with. After all she is charged by her bind to protect the tree with all she has. Ricther as her Lord is responsible for Eloras and the celestial tree. They way I see it she is as much a sworn vassal as anyone. The celestial tree is Ricthers. He granted Queen Elora the right to bond with it and make it her home. To me that’s a lot like a sworn vassal being given rights to live in a castle and raising their family in that house hold which are all sworn de facto by the head of the house.

The kindir have their palace. Its also a pure kindir racial town, so a kindir town hall would be better.

Now that I think of it, i'm pretty sure Richter wanted them to reverse engineer the townhall, but they couldn't do it.

Yeah I really hope that turns out to be worth it... all those special level souls... if he just uses them on enchantments right away, wouldnt that let them move on too? Why waste all that energy?

He could make some hella sweet gear.

My real point is that Ricther would be better off if all his vassalages have town halls.

It would be nice if the goblin hold could be made universal for his villages.

Although, it would be interesting to see what a Kinders town hall offers.

As much as the Kinder like to wander and travel their town hall should offer a bonus given for travelers information.

I would think it's bonus would be more geared towards the lessening or converting the crime stat some how, given they basically live in a kleptarchy.
