What does this mean for the gods of the land? Have most of them died off from lack of worshipers, leaving only those that inspired true, enduring belief (whether good, neutral or evil)? The clue seems to imply gods have a special way of leveling. We know from the land that they get most of their power from worshipers. Could their leveling be tied to the number of worshipers and the sincerity of their worship? Quantity and quality so to speak.
In Terry Pratchets Disc World if a God doesn't have enough Believers they become weaker till they become Small Gods, and if they lose enough Believers even if their Church continues on and has people visiting it (essencely they follow the Church not the God) they then Devolve into a Highly Intelligent Semi Immortal Animals, and usually enter a Hibernation like state till someone that actually has a Strong Belief in them (or something close enough to them) they wake up and are pulled to that person in order to try and get more Believers to become Stronger again. But if their Believers turn against their God and actively become Unbelievers in that God while knowing it actually Exists then it can actually die. If course in other Books different types of God's depend on Believers to different Degrees, some continue in and remain strong even without Followers but just not as Strong. Might depend on wether they are Small Gods, Demi-Gods, Lesser Gods, Greater Gods or OverGods, ect?
That’s probably true here. American Gods was published in 2001. As you mentioned there are several other books that are very similar. As much as everyone wants to be original about everything that could be said has been said before.
So Drag, is this thread a reconsideration of using a magic core at the chapel in Ricthers catacombs? I could see everyone falling back to his catacombs beneath his keep during the bugbear on slaughter. With the chapel renewed and people praying to anyone that would listen. Who will hear their cries? Will it be the god of luck?
God's do not die from the lack of worshipers.. If they have no worshipers they can lie dormant.. for eons.. (From "The Goblin" series) They Die if they are killed. Because in the beginning of times, A god appears.. but he has no worshipers! So God does like a miracle or creates a vision and then followers appear! F.e. a new god is born.. where is he gonna get the followers?!
Spoiler: Gods Eye, lack of Followers. In Gods Eye it says that without Followers Gods tend to suffer Dissolution of Self, so not exactly die but ???? I
Sounds like old-school David Eddings concept of gods fading but never dying unless slain. In the Elenium Gods don't die when their worshippers die out, instead they fade and become shadows off themselves, living on endlessly. On very rare occasions a faded god can regain their former strength, but its rare.
Yes yes. Bring out the God of luck, his uncle lol. Richter can probably already make a book with quotes of his sayings and life lessons: "Yay, it is said that it is better to be lucky than ugly."
