Here we are Drag, chewing the cows cud again.
When talking about ground warfare a raid is a penetrate of a camp or enemy territory for a specific purpose. Air raids are when air craft or in this case flying creatures invade enemy airspace in order to attack. I believe “ground” raids are normally used for a specific purpose of retrieving information, people, or things. Raids are normally more snatch and grab or for the purpose of showing the ability to cut through the enemies forces at will. At the moment in this story I wouldn’t think there are in front lines to speak of. We don’t know of any definitive lines or boundaries. When you don’t have anything more then locations being held it is easier to hit and run. With Ricther gaining two new entrances ideally he should place them at the ends of his dungeon transport range. In other words if he can use dungeon transport up to 60 miles away he should want the entrances 120 miles apart. That way he will maximize ha dungeon transport ability. That would allow Ricther to sneak up launch arrows, hurl rocks, and rain fire down on enemy structures. His air group cold fly off and his ground forces could port out. After some period of hitting the enemy they would become used to them hitting and fleeing. So after an extended period of harassment the wouldn’t expect a raid after a prebombardment. Then you could make good raids as most wouldn’t run to the walls they would hunker down waiting for it to pass over. Then you are upon them before they stick their heads up or hear a horn.

Well, it makes me fell like a chimp!

Maybe Skippy is right. We might all be a bunch of damned monkeys.

This has gone on for sometime like the Gombe Chimpanzee War 1974-1978. I suppose enough is enough.

Raiding is based on hit and run tactics. Its a group of raiders - could be footsoldiers, horsemen, pirates, vikings, bandits or any mobile group really - probing areas for weaknesses and trying to gather info they can use for larger attacks. Sometimes they will raid in force, which means larger bands capable of taking out small towns and lightly defended fortresses before rapidly retreating after torching everything in sight. The purpose is maximal damage for minimal investment, apart from the expendable raiders themselves.

Such tactics are often costly for the raiders in terms of lives, but it allows smaller contingents to do great damage to infrastructure, production capacity and the civilian population.

Overall a great way to force an opponent to disperse part of their forces to defend their hinterlands. One of the most common strategies in history.

No competent enemy is going to make it easy for you to sneak up close to the walls because its the obvious thing to do. They'll put their camps on high ground and clear back foilage as well as remove any obvious hiding spots in the cleared area, making it as easy as possible for the guardsmen on top of the walls or in watch towers to spot you. That's not to say raids on military camps can't succeed, but they are a lot more risky for the raiders then you make them out to be.

The goblins have their bats for air defense, we have no idea how effective that will be against Alma or the pixies.

I assume you mean to use Dungeon transport to get the golem out. Could work, though its limited to within five feet of Richter so he'd have to go on every raid the golem does. Risky to put your supreme commander out on a mission like that.

The rest of your ground force would then have to move overland back to the Dungeon entrance, avoiding their pursuers and ensuring somehow that those pursuers do not find the entrance to the Dungeon. If they do they would probably destroy it if the can. If not blocking it off, setting up various traps and a guardtower outside seems like a fairly easy way to ensure no more unexpected raids from that entrance.

attack in any way you want, as long as you will:
    • steal all their cash/gold/food/horses
    • write and send some fraudulent letters to boss-man
    • kill mage/rob him/ gather intel..
    • set up a charmed creature to spy!!(if ur smrt you will go around the limitations of charm)
    Love,
    Dad ;D

p.s. also a raid is really a great idea when the Main Army is engaged, less optional when the sleep :/

Drag, you can chew over this some.

From Roman Legions to Navy SEALs: Military Raiding and its Discontents

Drag their is a difference in raids and modern gorilla warfare. I’m not advocating sending sappers into fortified areas either. Although Ricther does need to use sappers and sapper support teams.

In modern gorilla warfare the vast amount of attacks are against fixed structures and support facilities. These attacks are made from distances by snipers, Grenadier teams, rocket propelled grenade squads, mortar teams, and by explosives teams. Sapper teams inside cities make Black op styles of attacks. Those teams have a sapper support teams which helps them evade their pursuers.

In modern times raids are used for specific purposes. They are meant to be snatch and grab.

You are right. Aleron will balls up giving Ricther whatever nearly god like powers and equipment to raid to raid hell and come back without a scorch mark on his backside.

So what this boils down to needing solid intel on enemy numbers, layouts, patrol routes, etc. Additionally they rehearse the strike beforehand and they also have gunships to ensure air superiority as well as give them an out if things go wrong.

Even then they emphasize the risks and how its no substitute for regular warfare, its a way to harrass and damage highvalue targets. As they put it

Something to consider here: sprites are small creatures - meidons are medium if I remember correctly, but they are only a small portion of the sprite population. They are almost certainly not using longbows, but instead shortbows with a severely shorter range.

Add to that the need to fire across a wall and they need to get in pretty close to be effective.

Similarly the golem is fairly shortranged whether its limited to 90 feet or 90 yards. A longbow for comparison can fire at least 200 -300 yards, the sources differ.

I'm not saying that the sprite hit and run tactic cannot work, it probably has a decent chance of working with a ton of planning, scouting and a good distraction. The first few times.

Though the goblins/ bugbears are occupiers who enslave any natives they can catch. Some of the remaining natives are definitely hitting them where and when they can.

It doesn’t matter. Aleron will make it happen with Straight up in your face raids. The golem will likely smash through any walls and let everyone else in for the party.

If you think about it Ricther has the command structure.

Alma being air command and relaying real-time movements and communications to Ricther. Then Ricther acting ground command issuing those communications to his men. All the sprites would need to do is carry a single fox fire crystal. Dropping foxfire on wood and thatched roofing something would burn.

It’s gonna be hard to be guerillas when you’re surrounded in a siege by a gigantic army. You can do some stuff but you’re gonna be severely hampered.

You gotta hit their supply lines and all sorts of chaos causing activities. Hit their morale and make ‘em less able to wage war. Get allies to hit them to make it a multi-front battle. Anything to even the playing field for the big siege.

It would be key to figure out a way to make the mists work again, if possible. Even if it’s just taking advantage of the range the approved people can see versus the bugbear allies can see.

Remember what Chesty Puller said. When his marine unit was surrounded he said

“Great. Now we can shoot at those bastards from every direction.”

Gorilla fighters are always in the middle of it. That’s how they do things.

ah yes a target rich environment.

Maybe Richter can take some bodies and craft "go away" signs. It probably involves the red eagle.

with portals and dungeon transport and dungeon, and alma.. bugbears will not do very well. though sky view will not do too much in a forest.

Would laugh super hard if the three bugbear patrol guys would not return cause 3rd and 4th powers were unlocked. What is reasonable, because its two powers and at once.

I still like the idea of leading any would be MV raiders through the dungeon traps.

Ricther could always try to damage the enemies palisades enough that his monster spell that draws monsters close could be weaponized.

Its still an interesting idea. I still think its the ideal position to launch attacks from. At least one or two strikes with enhanced arrows.
