How will Richter get access to runes

  1. Through essence enchanting by increasing enchantment level high enough

  2. Through essence enchanting after reaching higher tier

  3. Through essence enchanting by unlocking it some way (higher skill level, profession quests, etc)

  4. purchased through sea of chaos

  5. information discovered/won while questing

  6. learned via gift of tongues at tier 2

  7. gift of tongues tier 3 or higher

  8. Village research

  9. learned the hard way

Learning how to Create Wards might make learning how to use Runes a little easier.

But how he actually Learns Runes, it's Skill and making them would be due to a combination of Lucky Find (either by Chaos Sea, Quest, ect), then Learning the Hard Way, Village Research and Espionage and Recruitment.
But primary Lucky Find/Quest, Research and Hardway.

I also like the idea of learning one from the sea of chaos, I could see that happening. Like an incredibly unuseful rune.

I'd say it will come from studying the runes he has combined with research into magical theory (definitely worth pushing that branch of research). Though I fear this branch will be unlocked after the regular scripts, the magical scrips and the enchantments. Hopefully they will have enough knowhow to boost past some of that.

But considering even Yves has only unlocked the basics, its a way off.

This is the first step towards runic magic. Its the first step towards creating their own spells, their own enhancements - conversion is good, creating better -, a blueprint for a mages tower and all sorts of magical goodies. Tier 2 will be good.

It would be nice to have a standing order for Futon to write down every bit of Runic he remembers when he remembers it. Seeing some of that Runic already has probably unlocked memories of more. Getting all four powers going has also probably unlocked memories for Futon, and might include Runic.

Hold up, futon can write? I don't think he has opposable thumbs...

I don't think futen would help much with runes because I'm pretty sure more complex runes need to be:

    1. carved a certain depth,
    2. carved into specific materials (futen might be helpful here),
    3. carved accurately.

Assuming futen can write, he may be able to help with simpler (aka "unuseful") runes, but more complex runes will probably be beyond him. Drawing depth in a picture seems quite beyond futen's ability, not to mention drawing runes accurately, considering that he isn't a scribe.

The writing/making of runes would be Runic would it not? But is this different than from Runic script? They seem to be the same. But if Rune writing is known, then why have the runes been lost?

I have faith Futon can get across the idea or image of what he knows.

I thought they were different. I guess in my head one is magic made solid, involving very specific depth, materials etc. while the other is still just writing, though very efficiently. Runic script may be a simplified version of Runes that can be used for scribing purposes that still shows an abridged 'true' form of what is being written, without actually being Runes themselves.

Ex: Writing a page in runic wouldn't require magic or have any magic properties, but writing a Rune would.

Yes, very strange. In my mind (when writing the last couple posts) the rubbings were runes and that is the script they learn at master? Rank. Maybe they are seperated instead.

Before that post I thought they were always seperated. but why would the scribes like the runes so much? Because they want to learn Runic.

Could be found through a Mage proffession with scribing specialty or maybe professed scribe, with a Mage flavored specialization can unlock some tier two talent for experimenting with writing the Runes

You are mixing oranges and apples. There are certain magical scripts, but a Rune is more of a self-contained program. Height, depth, width, every aspect of the Rune defines it. Even a small alteration will change what it does. There is a lengthy diatribe on it by some scholar after they find the abomination containment rune.

To be fair the problem is that Richter calls magical scripts runes in the early books, because he basically doesn't know shit but thinks he does and he makes assumptions based off of fantasy lore from Earth. It makes him an unreliable narrator.

    He's also a terrible listener.

I somehow doubt Richter understands much of anything. "Might be hard" is the understatement of the year XD
My take is that Runes are giant puzzles where a hundred different factors play a part. More complex likely means greater accuracy, better materials higher quality and effect/power/strength all depends on the design.

Most likely, as is the case with other magical branches there are those who use the designs of others (like Richter the spellslinger) and those who are able to create their own Runes. The runsmiths in Yves for example most likely ape the designs of greater runesmiths. They might have some limited experimentation to alter known runes, but I doubt they craft their own from the bottom up.

It's not clear to me what's the difference between a rune and enchantment.

An enchantment is a purely magical construct attached to a physical object thereas a Rune is physical.

Hence there may not be an overlap in all situations, meaning something could be enchanted and have a Rune at the same time.

I know it’s not likely, but if Aleron decreases it runes could be created from an ancient spoken language. Spoken words have the power in the land. Perhaps in a runic language words would have the ability to enscribe themselves. The louder the larger the words embossed. Repeating the words might make them go deeper. We do know that Ricther can’t just copy the carvings and make them work. He might need to know the precise meaning and annunciation of the words along with exact timing to fix the souls stones empowering the spells with an active charge.
