My cousin just got back from her trip to Japan and couldn't stop talking about the HP world they have there. Honestly... I didn't even know they had one there but apparently it's in Osaka. She's really into the books and always cosplays as Herminia for cons, picture after picture of her with... honestly, junk! The wands were a big deal and she had to "get one that matched my personality" that the shopkeeper picked out. Not ever sure how since it was plastic! A truck load of candy all from the books and the only reason she didn't get a broom was because she worried it would fly well... as in, as luggage in the plane. This got me thinking, if you hit it big would you :- A. Cash in big time and milk it for every penny (Fifty shades, twilight, HP) B. Quality first. I'd pick and choose very, very, VERY carefully. It's not the money but the story (Terry Pratchett, Whoever wrote Mary Poppins) C. I'd retire and live off the royalties (the author of gone with the wind) D. Others?
Not a bad choice, the way things are going the author of ready player one and the martian might decide to go that route.
I'm looking to build a brand / world / universe with Tower of Gates. I'd let others play in my sandbox, but I'd keep the quality up.
yay twinses!! I'd also feel intimidated and keep writing under a few pen names! So more B? Like the open discworld rather then the uber controlled hogwarts?
Yeah. If I think if I manage to do something right, especially as a first-time author, I'd be really scared of disappointing readers with lesser later works -- it's like... fear of never being able to outdo myself (?) It might be different if the major success didn't come from your first work, though. That way there's less pressure.
