The sad thing is that it has such an easy fix that no one uses. The "identify" skill... And if you marry that up to a "quester" skill, or something like that. You can actually have growth in power rather than a sudden bumrush to the top followed by a long plateau into mediocrity in which, because the author grew their character too fast and lacks imagination, ultimately bottoms out with fights you don't give a shit about... There need to be more stakes than combat...
I have identify spells and scrolls that are needed unless they can guess them - ie put on a ring and you start levitating. Heh.
one thing about idenitfy is that it should have levels or something if everyone just has infinite scrolls its useless or relatively so
True. She has to use mana points or spend on the expensive scrolls... Not having it so readily available makes it a bit more interesting... when you don't give it away in stat screens.
Have them choose how much of their mana to drain? Like, they can spend 10 mana to get the name of something, 100 mana to get the first effect of it, or 1000 mana to get the second effect, etc. so if this drops for Someone: Sword [???] 36-57 damage 1h [???] [???] [???] Binds on pickup They’d have to spend 10000 mana on an identity cast. Or the equivalent in game currency for a scroll, if they didn’t have the skill/spell themselves.
