Warcraft comes to mind, obviously. I never played World of Warcraft, though both my brother and sister did. It was interesting that we all enjoyed the movie, even though I didn't know much more than the basics about it. Pacific Rim as well, which I LOVED. Can't wait for the sequel!
Pacific Rim was great! It had just the right amount of humor and action, imho. Is the sequel supposed to be coming out soon? Of course you have movies like Existenz too which was more VR than gaming.
Steven DeKnight, of Spartacus: War of the damned and Netflix's Daredevil fame, is writing and directing Pacific Rim: Uprising , so my hopes are high that it's going to be great as well. At the moment it's in post-production but I doubt we'll see it before next year. I never saw Existenz - going to look for it this weekend - thanks for the tip! Of course there's also Gamer (2009) with Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta and Michael C. Hall which was pretty hardcore.
That one is a bit tough and confusing, however, I don't think it would be LitRPG. It's really hard to categorize, but, I think it would be maybe closer to a Sports story.
I just included that in a blog the other day then sent a Tweet to Tom Hanks rubbing it in that he failed at stopping D&D to try to stir up some attention. Heh. https://litrpgreads.com/blog/timeline-dnd-editions
He did a pretty good job at the time, well between this movie and the "D&D is devil worship" nonsense, a couple of my friends had to sneak around in order to play. If my grandmother had her way all of my books would have been burned.
Me too. We called it Daredevils and something? I can't remember. My uncle actually gave me the first tan D&D booklets, but I lost them over the years. I think Magic the Gathering went through the same thing?
Been waiting for that for forever! I remember when it was first announced. That was sooo long ago. Fingers crossed that it's good!
Didn't see live action requirement, so .hack actually has a 3 part series that is watchable and about the duration of a Peter Jackson film, as well as a cgi movie. Both are definitely on the lighter side and somewhat affected by .hack's glacial pace, but because they are encapsulated stories rather than a series both actually move along and have some action. Will probably embarass myself with the suggestion, but the Conan films are worth a rewatch in my opinion. All those old movies that inspired Kevin Sorbos movies were great small dungeon adventure romps, but they aren't LitRPG by a longshot except through a backwards looking lens. Just watch and pretend the cast are all max level characters between expansions scrambling for gear and loot. Everything fantasy and scifi is LitRPG now!
Any of the portal fantasies - like Labyrinth, Return to Oz, The Last Starfighter - where someone is thrown into another world and has to figure out how it works.
Last Star Fighter wasn't really portal. Earth was part of the same universe, he just got picked up after performing well and was taken to another planet. The others are definitely portal though
In the UK we had sod-all issues. There was the odd nut, but we're nowhere near as religious as the US.
