I've noticed a surprising number of LitRPG folks are metal fans. And with the new Dimmu Borgir album out, I must admit, I don't love it yet - but it's really good to have on in the background while writing!

Nah. I own all three albums, and I'm young, (cough) ergo you cannot possibly be old.

500? No way. Unless you count past lives. I was a shipping supervisor in an Atlantean crystal warehouse. It was the big one just off the plaza for the Temple of the Sun.

I'm kind of eclectic in my taste for music. I've got tons of playlists on Spotify, bluetooth them to our TV's soundbar via my phone or tablet.

    Post Modern Jukebox
Rat Pack and other swing music
    Classic Rock
    Old Progressive Rock
    Metal
    Progressive and Melodic metal
    New Age
Celtic Folk music/ Rennaisance Fair music
    Celtic Rock
    Epic Trailer Music

Don't listen to jazz, when I was still playing keyboards i prefered to play hard rock/progressive/jazz

Yeah, I moved on from metal. The only thing I really listen to these days is the Conan soundtrack. Haha.

Definitely. Means you get to listen to it often. Now we just lack for the "liking it" part. ;) p.s. same thing with my wife.

I wish I were a huge metal fan. Unfortunately, I don't know any alteration magicke. Though I do have to ask "how does that work?" Do you just plug it in?

I have a strange relationship towards heavy metal considering I love it dearly but tend to stick towards traditional metal and proto-metal. I've never been able to really get into modern metal such as metalcore or Viking metal or 2000s alt-metal beyond a point. I mean, I'll listen to it and have songs on my iPod, but they're not the ones I come back to the most.
No different with punk rock either. 60s/early 70s proto-punk is f**cking fantastic, traditional 70s punk is great, early 80s punk all sounds great except for the stuff getting on MTV (and even then, it sounds great), 90s punk sounds great but some of the other burgeoning styles don't interest me, the 2000s is where it all really starts to get diluted, 2010s punk is a mixed bag but the retro stuff sounds great.
I haven't gotten into hip-hop anywhere near as much, but I can already tell that my feelings on it are roughly the same. 60s/early 70s proto-hip hop sounds amazing, late '70s/early 80s hip hop sounds great, etc. etc.

Also in each case, it's some 90s or early 2000s group that winds up being my favorite, ironically. Favorite metal band: Electric Wizard. Favorite punk band: Anti-Flag. Favorite hip-hop band: Deltron. Favorite rock band: Rage Against The Machine or Radiohead, depending on my mood. So something was happening in the '90s, or maybe I'm just nostalgic to a fault.

Here's to hoping something competent emerges in the 2020.
Never mind the bollocks either, here's some proto-metal from around 1970, 1971 or so.

Even MOAR proto-metal, this one from 1969!

This sounds like what it must feel like getting gangbanged inside a Scottish steel mill by a bunch of druids after dropping PCP.

"You stole that from one of the comments."

So what if I did? Away with you!

When it comes to 2000s metal, if it's not Tool, Avenged Sevenfold, or some of my more preferred buttrock favorites like Chevelle, Three Days Grace, and Disturbed, it's gotta be doom metal:

Speaking of NWOBHM and doom metal, one of my favorite "amateur" metal bands ever is probably the most "early '80s metal band" imaginable: Witchfinder General, which like a sleazier Black Sabbath as played by a teenaged literal garage band. And one of their albums had full-on tits on the cover.
