I'm re-watching Final Space and Neo Yokio ... they're both (fairly short) animated series on Netflix (Australia).
    So rad!

Just started Million Yen Women on Netflix. Only 2 episodes in but I'm digging it.

I just read the blurb. Is it a an RL harem attempt? The reviews are all positive so I thought I'd ask first.

No. It's not like that. There are 5 women, but it's not a sex thing. I'm not a fan of harems in fiction or movies.

Some of them flirt, but it's more about a writer trying to make his way in the publishing world, finding his self confidence, and learning about the backstories of the five women that are living in his house.

It's kind of a "Not everything is what it seems on the surface" kind of story. I'm on Episode 5 now.

    So far we have:
    - A struggling novelist (the guy), who doesn't have any friends or family, his father's on death row for killing his mother, a police officer, and the guy she was cheating with
    - A 30 year old woman who runs a high end call girl club where men pay 10,000 bucks a night to sleep with idols.
    - A 21 year old maid who married a really old guy who is now dying of a brain tumor
    - A high school student, former orphan, who won the lottery but couldn't cash in the ticket due to her age, and is now being extorted by the person who did it for her.
    - A happy go lucky actress that the guy didn't even know was world famous when she moved in with him.

So far don't have much info on the last person. It's really cool to see how the stories of these people intertwine. EAch of the personalities is really different but I like them all... Even the stone cold one.

    The Magicians

    RANT INCOMING!!!! And spoilers obviously.

So this series has an art contest out. A contest I wasn't planning to join but today I had nothing better to do so I thought "hey, Netflex has season one of this show, lets watch it and see if we get inspired or something"

... I have never hated show this much before in under ten minutes.

And I despise all this YA chosen one crap that twilight started, even those I didn't hate just went -Nope, not for me. what else is one- and forgot about it.

    This one... DEAR GOD!

Episode one. see if you can spot what's wrong :-

    - Everyone is post collage and looking to do their masters, the show bends over backwards to make sure you get that. That their post grads, all their tuition fees are paid off, their parents are out of the picture and they have no serious relationships... yet they all act 17.

    - Teen angst cranked to eleven down to the emo hair cut that covers half the character's face and him being depressed because nobody understands him and his life sucks while all his friends tell him and I quote "You have so many talents and good at so many things, just pick one. Please." This to a 25 year old played by a 30 something.

    - Walking down the street he suddenly finds himself in Hogwarts. Because magic.

    - They tell him they can trace those with potential but not accurately so they need to be tested. The test is not accurate though so there is a practical part after that to make sure. Those that fail either will have their memories wiped but that's not accurate so it might fail.

    That's the first ten minutes.

so far we have an angsty teen chosen one but he's an adult so sex, cursing and violence are all fine. We have a school and teachers attempting to be the cooler Hogwarts but showing only incompetence.

Here is the part that raised a red flag for me though.

The MC has been diagnosed with clinical depression and thoughts of suicide. Has been on medication for awhile now. Once he was admitted to the school the teacher talks him out of taking his medication because "You are not depressed. You are different and alone. You don't need those pills."

They make it very clear that the reason isn't that they are interfering with his magic, No it's because this random teacher thinks the Psychologist he's been seeing for years was wrong.

At worst these shows are cliched and boring, this one is down right harmful!

    Episode two

The author the MC liked died in the pilot. He is told he died because he ate an oreo. "Magicians can't eat Oreos?" "No, diabitics can't eat Oreos"

That's not how that works you ignorant #%&^%*!

His childhood friend that failed the magic test calls him saying the memory wipe didn't work. She needs someone to talk to, it's driving her insane. He shows up with his friends all happy and smiles, tells her to effectively buzz off and hey maybe this wasn't for her. leaves her to party.

She gets sexually assaulted in the bathroom and the guy offers to teach her magic. Follows him to a meat locker like a lamb and the show hints that this was the right choice and she's being tough about it.

MC is told he is not special and there is no chosen one crap. The minute he leaves they turn around and all but tell the camera they were lying and will tots protect "the kids"... the post grads kids that so far are surrounded by incompetence.

I read in a review that this is based off a book where the characters are all highschoolers and starting collage when they show magical tendencies which completely makes sense. Also that he TV series is crap in comparison and turned the whole thing to Soft Porn Harry Potter missing the points in the books.

I'd like to add that the show is also pointless because three episodes in and I have no idea what they want to say other then "Aren't we cool? Look at this, we are so cool just by being us!"

Ok, rant over. I'm better now. Sorry you had to read all that. I needed to purge that from my system.

Oh and episode three is just pure stupidity and incompetence.

The water fountain at the school's enterence? Yeah it's bottomless and so it's called sucide fountain. there is no railing or wards around it. in fact the edges are on ground level.

Only later do the teachers politely ask the students to stay away from it...

The funny part? While the teacher was talking the camera had lingering shots of the water surface with a hand coming out of it and here I was in RL giving it the middle finger. The hand gave the camera the middle finger too and I couldn't even laugh at that.

Trying to be, It relies too heavily on the production value and the "coolness" factor.

Seriously three episodes in and nobody has a personality, motivation or end game. They just go "oh magic, ohhhhhhh"

Doesn't help that the main cast all have nudity clauses so all the sex scenes are of them dry humping in their underwear. Pathetic...

I got to say, I'm really hesitant to watch new TV shows in the fantasy genre. My reason is similar to why I hate movie adaptations from the 80s and 90s.

It seemed like for some time, they were refusing to show the execution of female characters, when if a male character did they same thing they would show blood, guts, and all.

Not sure if the double standard is still in place. I need to watch new stuff.

I don't think that's nudity clauses so much as it is just broadcast TV limitations set by the FCC. We aren't allowed to show breasticles or, flying spaghetti cthulhu forbid, full frontal nudity, on any channel in the US except for the "premium" channels (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, etc).

Funny thing about the FCC, that's a lot of the reason I hate fantasy on television. If you got rid of that, there might be less "Omg they're a woman, lets not execute them."

It's different if a countries government decides that, because that's their culture.

FCC is not culture. Quite the opposite.

Suppose someone were to write a script that riffs on the FCC in a novel. If something like that were adapted for TV, it would be in their market interest not to produce, or produce with severe changes, the book, because they would inherently not produce something that riffs on themselves.

So the FCC, in a way, is a creative expression, supressing entity.

    Hi !
Recently I finished watching Narcos season 2. I want to start season 3 as well but I heard that it's not worth it and boring. Maybe somebody watched it? Any opinions? :)

    Thanks !

Binge watched Maniac. The new netflix original.

    Artsy, fartsy, wanna be brazil.

I'm shocked by the good reviews this is getting. The story starts at episode three, the rest up till then is just paving the road and going "you're not going to get it" in that grating drool actresses use when portraying a too cool for school character.

Episode three tells you the whole story in three frames max per character.

Then repeats it, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over.... till episode 8. different visuals are used but it's the same thing. The story ends in episode 8.

Then keeps going for two more episodes like a guy limping to the finishline.

Every scene goes on too long. random things are placed screaming SYMBOLISM at you at the top of their lungs.... not sure even the show knows symbolism for what but symbolism...

I get that the show is trying to have a dreamlike structure so no begining, middle or end in this tale but it just doesn't work for the 7.5 hours this is going on. It would have in a movie format but as a mini series... very boring.

The retro futuristic visuals were cool though.

Finally Watched Million Yen Women. I started with one episode and ended up bingeing the whole thing in two days.

That was beyond good!!! Totally under-rated and needs more media attention.

If anyone's looking for a decent series, I've found The Rookie with Nathan Fillion is a rather more thoughtful addition to the crime gene than I expected. Unlike Castle they make an effort to show some of the real situations cops could face and they treat it with respect. Still some humour (thank goodness) but a much more rounded, balanced show than Castle was, imo. So far a 7/10 for me with the potential to climb to an 8.

Yeah, it was a strange show, but I liked all the artsy/surreal stuff. Seemed to be more of a passion piece than something to make $$?

I still think the whole show was them in the machine and the AI was trying to explain to them what happened... That's what I liked the best, I think - the emergent AI...

I would have agreed with you if it wasn't for the whole 80's vibe it was giving off. I honestly thought it was a throwback show from the 80's that Netflix licensed... like friends or something.

The 80's are in right now and nostalgia sells. It's getting all positive reviews though so who knows. Personally I just found it boring and kept watching hoping something wow will emerge from this loop... it didn't.

So the 80s being big against wasn't just my perception?

I have more of an ironic taste in 80s and 90s. I write to subvert it because I hate some of the tropes.

Except for the big hair, I wish that wasn't just an 80s thing.

As one actress described her 80's hair "teased up to Jesus!"

People are calling it retro futuristic in the reviews but it's clearly 80s. They even dropped any pretense with the first dream where they were a couple rescuing that lemur. Maybe because I was bored with it that I thought all the 80's visuals was what sold it considering all the positive reviews mostly referenced the visuals.
