    Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers, is about this very topic. Pretty much the entire book is about how circumstance and luck play a big role in the ultra successful. This is also the book that originated the oft cited 10,000 hour rule.

    I don't think Gates was really all that lucky. IBM made a stupid mistake and he capitalized on it.

    Luck is a fortune you inherit. Hard work is a fortune you build yourself.
