The litrpg genre seems like a good place to work cryptocurrency into the writing... anyone ever read anything where a crypto of some form is used as payments either in game or IRL? Seeing as most are set in the near future it seems more legit than gold and silver pieces. Do you think this would work for or against reader immersion?

You mean like bitcoin? Actually no. the closet I've seen is an old Sci-fi book from the 50's where the currency is downloaded annually into credit cards. Now keep in mind this was the fifties, aka before those were even invented.

Another place is doctor Who where the universal currency is called "credit unites"

would it work? depends on the setting. If the whole thing is midevil in tone then it'll stand out. if it's a mix of the past and future (say bronze horses shaped motorcycles flying through the air) then sure why not?

It all comes down to how you sell it to the reader.

You could almost certainly do it in a medieval world...
Create a Pratchett-esque universe where the Blockchain encircles the equator... Potentially underground... Made of literal blocks of stone...
Add in miners and sculptors carving the Blockchain into statues of animals... Add a bit of commentary on fiat and speculative currencies...
And if you're lacking conflict... Have your miner dragged before a court of Speculators for embevelling... Who then speculate on what he did...

Incipere uses Bytes of data as currency rather than gold, but it’s not quite crypto currency.

In Astral Falls, which is set in 2047...

Thus it's a bit of a plot point (no pun intended). Also, I'm using the outdated symbol for bitcoin (aka the Thai Baht) in the draft only because Word doesn't yet have functionality for ₿. When I move it to format it properly in another software, I can swap it out.

So yeah, if it hasn't been done before, I might be the first. Bitcoin is straight up the currency in the game.

I've been trying to invent my own for the sake of literature but it's nigh impossible to find one that hasn't been taken already. Maybe derpcoin. Nope... that's taken too.

    Just as a funtime one...Doinkcoin.

Some very early Roman coins had sex acts on the back. They were issued to troops to be redeemed with whatever local ladies or gentleman of the night the soldier wanted, then, the receivers could redeem the coins at the Roman paymasters for local currency or other items of value. This allowed the troops to not have to worry about acquiring local coin for relieving their tension, the local socialators could easily receive business and had no worries about being paid. Where troops were regularly stationed, there was a thriving economy with coin that was backed by the oldest profession in the world.

You could call it C.O.L.D. or some other acronym - Cryptocurrency Online Legacy Denomination or whatever works for you.

Or G.OL.D. - Generic Online Denomination

    It's not just gold. It's G. OL. D.
