This might sound a bit self promotional, but honestly, I think Epic ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_(Kostick_novel) ) was one of the first of a genre that didn't really exist back in 2004. I had been totally addicted to Everquest for a couple of years and helped run a guild (Ages of Antonica, on the Nameless Server), which got me into the politics of the scene. And back then, too, gold farmers were just becoming a nuisance. So it occurred to me to set a novel in a world where everyone is playing a fantasy RPG, but this world had become dominated by elderly gamers. And the plot would be the battle for justice by the ordinary people of the world, with their best hope of change being to try to find a way within the game (eponymously called Epic) to subvert the power of Central Allocations. I hope some of you have read it and am very happy to answer questions here.
Feel free to list your books or whatever in your signature. Our rules are very laid back at the moment. Sounds like you're pre-LitRPG to me, not that I'm the judge or anything.
I'm actually reading Epic right now. It's been a fun read so far. Also glad to see another former EQ player. I'm still mad the new EQ game got cancelled.
Thanks Duncan. I hope you enjoy it all the way through. I was a ranger on Nameless, you? Also, I'm enjoying writing my work-in-progress, it's a LitRPG that very much has EQ dynamics and it brings back memories of some great times.
Finished Epic this afternoon. It was a wonderful read even if I did want more of the Count and Anonemuss! Will be picking up Saga soon.
Hi Duncan, really glad you liked it. In my original notes, the Count died quite early on. But as I wrote the book I realised just how smart and dangerous he was... Make sure to get the free mini-book from this forum: the Siege of Mettleberg. It is in fact more Epic-related than Saga, which is a cyber-punk world rather than a fantasy one.
I'll have to check that out. So I went to Amazon to get Saga and, uh, what's up with this copy going for over $700???
Yeah, it's some kind of scam I think. I've seen a few fake titles put up where they add 'Kostick' to the title of the book. As opposed to the real one. which is less than ten dollars.
Are any of the hardcovers legit? I generally by Kindle versions but occasionally snag hardcovers to collect.
Yes, here: https://www.amazon.com/Saga-Conor-Kostick/dp/0142414220/ Some very cheap ones if you don't mind second hand.
Excellent. Do you sell autographed copies anywhere? I'm quite intrigued to see how/why Erik shows up in Saga so I should probably go start that!
Spoiler... Erik... no, wait Hmm autographed is tricky. If you wanted to send me a book to sign and return, I'd be happy to do that.
