It's a reference to the gnome conspiracy subplot in the video game Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura! (I don't know. But it'd be funny if it was.)
The cover of my LitRPG novel has a gnome on it...and he's the POV character...although if you ask Glenn/Jax, being a gnome has its drawbacks.
The biggest one being those asshole cupboards that people always insist on having installed over the top of the fridge, right? Ugh. I HATE those.

I for the life of me can not recall where I read it but originally gnomes were meant to be a mix of Elves and dwarves. Why they liked nature and lived in trees and or caves. They had characteristics a lot like Hobbits and that kind of stunted their growth a bit and they changed to try find a new niche where they would not be compaired/confused with Hobbits. Since I can not remember where I could this information, it is quite possible I dreamed it all.
